Several years ago, Christie Architecture designed a fantastic kitchen renovation in a mid-century split level home in Tigard, OR. The project featured walnut cabinetry with a bright pop of orange hexagonal tile over the range. Not only did our client love it, but everyone who saw the room commented on its striking visual impact. Even Clayhaus, the tile manufacturer, still features it on their website.
Recently, our client called, wanting us to create an equally impressive design to transform her out-of-date, dark, and depressing hall bath. With her kids grown, she no longer needed a bathtub. And since the bathroom would serve older guests, a walk-in shower would be ideal. Most important, she wanted the design to be as impactful and memorable as the kitchen.
A room within a room
With the tub out of the way, we had space to play, and came up with the idea to treat the walk-in shower as a ‘room within a room.’ We wanted the shower to be a distinct space within the overall bathroom, and once again, colorful Clayhaus tile provided the inspiration. By tiling the shower walls AND the ceiling we created a three-dimensional volume of texture and color.
By dropping the shower floor to support the walk-in configuration, the continuous flooring material makes the space feel larger. To rival the kitchen color, we selected an equally fun and bright 1×6 tile in ‘Blue Lagoon’ from Clayhaus. A custom walnut vanity, designed to look like a piece of furniture, adds a touch of sophistication. And finally, we added natural light by creating a 2×6 ceiling opening with a 2×2 skylight.
The experience
A dark slate floor grounds the space, guiding the user inside. Meanwhile, a glimpse of the vibrant blue tile entices them deeper into the bathroom.
Once inside, the shower room fully reveals itself–an impressive three-dimensional volume of color. A minimal, floor-to-ceiling glass partition separates the shower from the rest of the room and serves as a splash guard.
Finally, while showering, you are bathed in the beautiful Blue Lagoon hue. The room within a room experience comes to life, framing the details of the bathroom beyond.
