chase bathroom

Location: Portland, Oregon

This project involved the addition of a bathroom to a 100-year old Victorian house. The objective was to create a space where multiple bathing activities could occur simultaneously while still offering each user a sense of their own space.

The sinks and toilet are located in one half of the room with the tub and shower in the other half. There is a clear division of space through the use of materials – not dividing walls. A glass wall protects the toilet from overspray from the shower. Traditional mouldings and the original claw foot tub acknowledge the history of the Victorian, while modern tiles and fixtures bring the space into the 21st century.

Owner Meredith Chase summed up the goals of the space perfectly when she stated, “The bathroom is our favorite space in the house. My husband and I can shower, 3-year old Zoe can wash her hands, and 1-year old Tatum can sit in the tub – all at the same time. We never thought that with such a big house we’d end up using our bathroom as a family room!”
